PAINT DISCOLORATION ON "AERO-WING" SPOILER
1987 FIREBIRD MODELS
Some early 1987 Firebird models equipped with the "Aero-Wing" spoiler may exhibit a paint discoloration after sun exposure.
If the condition is encountered the following procedure should be used.
1.
Call Pontiac Technical Assistance Center (TAC) with VIN and paint code information (TAC Number 1-800-742-4636).
2.
TAC will take the information, give the caller a case number and direct order a new spoiler in color for the vehicle.
3.
When the new spoiler is installed, the Julian date from the bottom of the old spoiler should be recorded on the repair order. Again call TAC
with the case number and the Julian date from the spoiler to close the case.
The new spoiler will be shipped complete with high mounted stop lamp and replacement clips for installation. The old spoiler should be put back in the
carton and held for disposition. Don't forget to put the Julian date on the R.O.
Removal and installation procedure is as follows:
REMOVAL
^
Raise lift window and remove six (6) fasteners that hold the plastic cover over lower inside deck lid, remove cover and disconnect CHMSL (center
high mounted stop lamp).

Remove screws and nuts retaining the spoiler and lamp assembly.
^
Gently tap spoiler with palm of hand on rear edge to move spoiler forward in car position. This will remove plastic Christmas trees from metal
brackets on deck lid.

The spoiler should now be free from attachments. Lift rear of spoiler off of deck lid and pull CHMSL wires through access hole.
INSTALLATION
^
Install new fasteners in the retainers as far rearward as possible.
^
Connect lamp wire and install spoiler by locating holes over fasteners and pushing down until completely seated.

Install screws and nuts on ends and center locations.
CAUTION: Do Not tighten CHMSL bolts more than 20 +/- 2 inch pounds.

Install the cover plugs, plastic cover plate, and close window.
